I don't think there's any reason full voice acting couldn't work if it's done correctly, it's been done well on some ordinary RPGs such as Knights of the Old Republic. And Bioware? Don’t make me laugh. They’ve spent more money making the Old Republic than James Cameron spent on Avatar. you not. More than $ 300 million! Can you believe that? And you know what they’re most proud of? This is the kicker. They are most proud of the sound. No seriously. Something like a 20Gig installation, and most of it is voiceover work. That’s the best they have. The rest of the game is a joke. EA knows it and so does George Lucas, they’re panicking , and so most of Mythic has already been cannibalized to work in Austin on it because they can’t keep pushing back launch.
But I think it hints at a MMOs failure because it shows a fundemental misunderstanding of how players act and how to manage resources. Nearly every player in The old Republic would click through the dialogue rapidly. Even most players interested in the lore do so, because leveling as a fast speed is important to them, and has to take preference over listening to voice-acting.
The other reason that I can confidently say "waste of resources" is that these fully voice-acted MMOs always seem to have a lot of missing/upcoming content at launch, things which players would of got a lot more enjoyment from. I only think full voice-acting is a good idea when there is nothing else that needs to be added to the game.
